Highlighted by National Freshman of the Year Aquille Carr of Patterson (Baltimore, Md.), MaxPreps.com presents the 2009-10 Boys Basketball Freshmen All-American Team.
Carr, a 5-foot-6 guard, created a major buzz in the Charm City this season, earning Baltimore All-Metro honors after pouring in 25.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.3 steals per game.
“I didn’t really know how good he was (coming in),” Patterson head coach Harry Martin said. “A couple of the guys on the team were talking about him, but you kind of take that with a grain of salt until you see him play.”
It didn’t take long for the frosh phenom to make a believer of his coach.
“It’s amazing how he can finish around the basket,” Martin said. “He averaged almost 26 points per game and most of the points came inside the paint. He has some improvement to make from the outside. Once he develops a consistent 3-point game it’s really going to be impressive.”
Arkansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Memphis and Texas are among the college powers already checking in.
Carr has shined in matchups against teams featuring star guards, dropping 39 points against Josh Selby and Baltimore rival Lake Clifton during the season and 32 in AAU ball against Indianapolis star Marquis Teague at the recent Boo Williams Invitational in Virginia.
All-American selections are based on statistics, team success and local, regional and state honors from the recently-completed season. Potential at the college or professional level is not a consideration.
First Team
Brian Bridgewater, Episcopal (Baton Rouge, La.)
6-4 / 210 / Forward
Averaged 22.1 points and 11.2 rebounds per game en route to District 7-2A MVP and second team All-State honors.
NATIONAL FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Aquille Carr, Patterson (Baltimore, Md.)
5-6 / 150 / Guard
It’s not a misprint – the best freshman in the country this season was just 5-foot-6. The Baltimore Sun called Carr’s campaign “one of (the) finest freshman seasons ever in area” after he put up 25.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.3 steals per game.
Kasey Hill, Mount Dora Bible (Mount Dora, Fla.)
6-0 / 160 / Guard
